Marian Cuneo, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 3 in Jackson, CA, surrounded by friends and family. The youngest of three children born to Hazel Griffith and James A. Chichizola of Jackson Gate, Marian and her sister Virginia rode their horses around Amador County in the days when there were few fences and few paved roads. Marian attended high school at Anna Head School in Berkeley, CA, and two years of college at UC Berkeley where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She helped her father in the Chichizola Store in Jackson Gate, and after her father's death in 1943, took over the general store's operation until 1955. She married Lawrence Stanley Cuneo in 1954, and together they ran the C & C Cattle Ranch. She and Stanley enjoyed hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and sought out secluded fly fishing sites. They were active in protecting and sustaining Amador County land in its natural state. Marian was an avid reader, and she'll be remembered for her quick wit. She loved her animals: horses, dogs, and cats.
She is predeceased by her husband Stanley (2006), her sister Virginia Schroeter (1991), her brother Thomas Chichizola (1936), and nephew Thomas Cullinan (2008). Survivors include: her niece Hazel Schroeter Powell and husband Jeffrey Powell of Santa Cruz, CA, and her grand niece Amy Frances Powell; nephew Harry R. Schroeter and wife Sharon Schroeter of Sarasota, FL and grand niece Ruth Schroeter Tate and grand nephews Steven Schroeter and David Schroeter.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 115 Court Street, Jackson, CA 95642 or Foothill Conservancy, PO Box 1255, Pine Grove, CA 95665 or Amador Land Trust, 711 Court Street, Jackson, CA 95642. At Marian's request, services will be private.
