March 18, 1919 - January 13, 2010
Charles Frederick Cook, 90, finished life peacefully at home in Sutter Creek surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. He was born on March 18, 1919 to Charles Lewis and Irene Marie (Barone) Cook at the St. George Hotel in Volcano, CA. He attended school in the Volcano one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Sutter Creek High in 1937. Summers were spent at Cook's Station and working on the county roads before entering the 184th infantry of the California National Guard in 1940. He married Barbara Nadine Lawrence from Fiddletown just prior to being drafted into the US Army and served in the Pacific Theatre from July 1943 to September 1945. Charles was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant from the 251st Ordnance Ammunition Company on September 28, 1945. After the war he purchased and ran the Grower's Inn in Stockton, then went on to work at the Port of Stockton as a dock superintendent, where he retired 34 years later as Marketing Manager. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Lee Thorsen purchased a 30-acre ranch in Mountain Ranch where he grew Zinfandel grapes and made a private collection of wine under the label Quail Valley Vineyard, which won many awards at both the Calaveras and Amador County Fairs. Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman, a fantastic cook, a loving father and devoted husband.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Louis and Betty. He is survived by his wife of 24 years Lee G. Thorsen, his brother Toby (Carol) Cook, his sister Marjorie Hunt, his three children Greg Cook, Bonnie Cook, and David (Carla) Cook, his step-daughters Claudia (Terry) Minard, and Pam (Phil) Rockenbach, his grandchildren, Frank, Jesse, Maureen, and Elliott, and his step-grandchildren, Barbara and Beth. His remains will be interred at the Volcano Cemetery following a private family gathering.
