Ronald W. "Ron" Outland peacefully slipped away at Sutter Roseville Medical Center on January 17 at the age of 78, following a brief and unexpected battled with cancer. Ron was a long-time resident of Amador County, and spent many wonderful years here as an elementary and high school teacher and later as a district administrator. Ron was a truly extraordinary man, and he touched the lives of so many people, especially his students. He considered a lifetime in the educational profession to be his greatest accomplishment and highest honor.
Ron overcame many obstacles in his life, including crushing poverty, neglect and several years in foster care until being adopted by the Dean of Students at Oakdale High School, who recognized Ron's promise and potential. Ron's experiences led him towards a life of service. Following his Korean War service as a Navy Corpsman serving with a Marine Division, and Physicians Assistant on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea, Ron returned to civilian life and completed college studies and the teaching program a San Jose State University. It was at this time, while completing an internship at Fricot Boys Ranch in Calaveras County that he met and married his beloved first wife, Beverley. Ron first taught at Jackson Elementary School, and later at Jackson High School, where he also coached wrestling. Near the end of his career, Ron also acquired his Marriage and Family Counseling certification, and helped many families and students through his compassionate care.
Ron and Beverley raised a family and lived many beautiful years together until her death in 1993. A few years later, on a train trip across Canada, Ron was blessed to meet Earline Charles, who he would later marry. Ron and Earline had been happily married for nearly 14 years at the time of his death.
Ron Truly saw the good in everyone, and because of his own life experiences, never gave up on anyone. His kindness, consideration and understanding was a blessing to his family and friends. He was a loving father and role model to his sons, who considered him their hero and the greatest man they had ever met. He was a proud and affectionate grandfather to his five grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by Richard Outland and Marie Outland, his adoptive parents, his first wife Beverley Outland and two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Earline and his two sons, Mark and Lance. He is also survived by his loving daughters-in-law Rose Outland and Barbara Magpusao, and grandchildren Aaron, Luke, Ohi, Beverley and Lydia Outland.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial mass Saturday, January 30 at 12:00 P.M. at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Pioneer. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made at a later date to Ronald W. Outland Memorial Scholarship Fund.
