Bernard Fitze died in Medford, Ore. He was born to James and Ellyn Fitze in Southern Calif. Among other farming duties during his youth near Bakersfield, he raised and showed prize-winning hogs at various fairs, including the World's Fair in San Francisco, in 1939, the year he graduated from high school in Bakersfield.
He attended college veterinary courses and worked in the oil fields until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in March 1942. He proudly served in the Pacific and Asian Theaters through WWII and was honorably discharged as a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class in December 1946. In 1949, he moved to Amador County where he built a home and farm and raised a family with his wife, Grace. He worked at Preston in Ione and retired from the State before moving to Monument, Ore. in 1971 to fulfill his dream of ranching. In later years, he built more shops and barns, enjoyed tending and riding his horses and mules, hunting and fishing, handcrafting knives, and welding small projects.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Fitze and a daughter, Elaine Loehr. He is survived by daughters, Deena (Tom) Clark of Haines, Ore. and Carolyn (John) Valle of Grass Valley, Calif. and son-in-law, Paul Loehr of Medford, Ore., 7 grandchildren: Matt, Theresa, Dan, Josh, Monica, Emily and Ben and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held in the spring at the National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.
