John Peter Lamat passed away peacefully and surrounded by loving family on Sunday, July 11th at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. He was born February 27, 1928, in Oakland, CA to John and Katherine Lamat.
After graduating from Castlemont High School in Oakland, CA, where he was a standout football, basketball, and track & field athlete, he graduated from University of Northern Colorado, in Greely. After college, John spent the following 4 years serving in the Air Force and he became an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team in pole vaulting. After the service, John returned to University of Northern Colorado, where he completed his Master's Degree and met his loving wife of 52 years, Evelyn.
In the late 1950's, John and Evelyn relocated to Amador County. He became a passionate, committed, and much loved educator and a highly successful and competitive coach for the Jackson High School "Fighting Tigers". In the early 1970's, John and family relocated to Southern California (Brawley, CA), where he continued his love for teaching and as Head Freshman Football Coach, Head Varsity Track & Field Coach and Athletic Director of the Brawley Wildcats. After retirement, John continued his passion for art. He taught art classes, produced award-winning watercolor works, and continued receiving numerous 1st-place awards for creating the Amador County (among others) booth exhibit at the California State Fair.
John loved Jesus Christ, family, serving his church and in his community. He was honest, kind and generous and he "never met a stranger". He had many friends and "extended family" throughout the world.
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Paul, and son, John "Pete" Lamat.
John leaves behind his wife, Evelyn, daughters Lori (Ed) of Vancouver, WA and Evie (Brad) of Rancho Mirage, CA and their children, and son, Randy of Kobe, Japan. In addition, he will be mourned by his sister, Elizabeth Stevens, in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, former athletes, students, friends, and acquaintances throughout the world.
A celebration of life will be held at 10 am Friday, July 16th, at Brawley Methodist Church, Brawley, CA. Condolences can be emailed to jelamat@adelphia.net. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Methodist Church of Brawley, 133 K. Street, Brawley, CA 92227 or a scholarship fund in honor of John Lamat at Brawley Union High School. Checks need to be made out to BUHS - John Lamat Trust Account, 480 North Imperial Avenue, Brawley, CA 92227.
